Working in the twilight zone

Debra Roberts (1961) could be described in many ways. She is an influential figure in the field of climate change adaptation, a government official in South Africa and one of the Co-Chairs of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC); but what truly illustrates the person she is, is her reaction to receiving the honorary doctorate at the UT. ‘This honorary degree should go to my parents.’

Debra Roberts (1961) kan op vele manieren beschreven worden. Ze is gezaghebbend op het gebied van klimaatadaptatie, werkt voor de Zuid-Afrikaanse regering en is een van de vicevoorzitters van het Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC). Maar wat haar pas écht karakteriseert, is haar reactie op het eredoctoraat dat haar werd toegekend door de UT. ‘Dit eredoctoraat zou eigenlijk naar mijn ouders moeten gaan.’

Het cv van Wim van Saarloos (1955) is onmogelijk op één A4tje te vangen. De Leidse emeritus hoogleraar theoretische fysica krijgt van de UT een eredoctoraat vanwege zijn verdiensten als wetenschapper, wetenschapsbestuurder en -visionair. ‘We staan voor de uitdaging om meer mensen zich thuis te laten voelen in de Nederlandse wetenschap.’

It’s impossible to compile a CV for Wim van Saarloos (1955) on one sheet of paper. The emeritus professor of theoretical physics at Leiden is receiving an honorary doctoral degree from the UT for his outstanding merits as scientist, research administrator and visionary. ‘The challenge we currently face is helping more people feel at home in the Dutch scientific community.’

Jaya Baloo: Topvrouw tussen hackers

Ze vreest geen enkele hacker of cyberaanval, maar het krijgen van een eredoctoraat van de Universiteit Twente maakt haar ronduit emotioneel. ‘Ik vind het een ongelofelijke eer’, aldus Jaya Baloo (1973), topbestuurder bij ’s werelds grootste antivirusbedrijf. Ze ontvangt de ereprijs voor haar verdiensten op het gebied van cybersecurity.

She’s not afraid of a single hacker or cyber attack, but receiving an honorary doctorate from the University of Twente makes her really emotional. ‘I take it as an unbelievable honour’, proclaims Jaya Baloo (1973), top executive at the biggest anti-virus company in the world, Avast Software. She’s been awarded the honour for her services to the field of cyber security.

Prins Constantijn wil met de UT op weg naar ‘the next level’

‘Ik vind het belangrijk dat mijn eredoctoraat iets gaat bijdragen’

Prins Constantijn (52) is sinds 2016 de startup-ambassadeur van Nederland. Hij krijgt voor zijn inzet als vaandeldrager van startende ondernemers een eredoctoraat van de UT. Met Constantijn als eredoctor hoopt de UT een ‘next-level’ ondernemende universiteit te worden. Zijn advies? ‘Wees genereus en behandel ondernemers als topsporters.’

Prince Constantijn (52) has been the Netherlands’ start-up ambassador since 2016. The University of Twente is awarding him an honorary doctorate for his efforts as promotor for new entrepreneurs. By celebrating Constantijn with an honorary title, the UT hopes to rise to the next level as entrepreneurial university. His advice? ‘Be generous and treat entrepreneurs like top athletes.’

Jamie Hyneman will visit the University of Twente in November. The special effects expert, who is mostly known as a co-creator of the TV show MythBusters, received an honorary doctorate from the UT in 2011.

Famous MythBuster Jamie Hyneman has been at the University of Twente since Friday. ‘It’s a very vibrant university. I’ve seen an impressive array of disciplines and topnotch people, who are focused and energetic,’ he says after spending four days at the UT campus.

Jamie Hyneman is currently visiting the University of Twente. ‘It’s fantastic to be here. I consider the UT to be my alma mater in a sense. An honorary degree can be taken as a nice gesture or as a possibility for building a real relationship – and that is how I see it,’ said the famous MythBuster when he arrived to the campus this morning.

MythBuster Jamie Hyneman coming to the UT

Jamie Hyneman, famous from the show MythBusters, will visit the University of Twente in a few weeks. Hyneman, who also received an honorary doctorate from the UT in 2011, will be at the campus from the 10th until the 13th of March. He will participate in a number of events, some of them also open to the general public.

This 4TU Career Special is a shared publication by the news editors of Cursor (Eindhoven University of Technology), Delta (Delft University of Technology), Resource (Wageningen University and Research), and U-Today (University of Twente). The magazine came into being in collaboration with industry, and is explicitly aimed towards students who are either in the final phase of their studies, or have just graduated.
