Applying for a job in times of corona is a daunting task for any recent, or soon-to-be graduate. This second edition of the 4TU Career Special is full of tips on how it is best approached. It is an unusual edition, as the magazine was both produced and published during this period of crisis. However, above all, as the editorial boards of the four technical universities, we understand that especially now, as a job seeker, you could use a bit of help.

Therefore, in this edition you will find plenty of information about ‘the new working’, including practical advice on digital job applications. Additionally, it features a story about the effects the corona crisis has had on the job market. It is good to know that universities, and the technical universities in particular, remain pivotal to an innovative society. These are the words of Paul van Nunen, who is connected to Brainport Development in Eindhoven. ‘Eventually we will have to strengthen the earning capacity in the Netherlands by connecting new knowledge to new products. We are lucky to have these excellent universities’, says Van Nunen.

In addition, we also report on entrepreneurship, start-ups, and the careers of our alumni. Louise O. Fresco, president of the 4TU Federation and chair of the executive board, kicks off with the following words: ‘At precisely this moment that the world’s economy comes to a standstill and our campuses are closed, this career special is there to show our students that their education offers them a world of limitless possibilities.’

Research with a social impact

Conducting research together to resolve social issues. That is the challenge that the 4TU federation posed to the four participating technical universities, along with a research budget of €22 million. UT professors Tatiana Filatova, Herman van der Kooij and Michel Versluis are at the head of three of the five 4TU studies.

Met het blad, dat in het Engels en Nederlands verschijnt, willen we informeren en verbinden. Door verhalen over onderwijs, onderzoek, ondernemerschap, studentenleven en alumni brengen we verschillende doelgroepen bij elkaar.

With the magazine, which appears in English and Dutch, we want to inform and connect. De 4TU.Federatie presenteerde gisteren in Den Haag vijf nieuwe onderzoeksprogramma’s, waarvoor 22 miljoen euro is vrijgemaakt. In totaal werken 44 tenuretrackers en 29 postdocs aan de onderzoeksdomeinen. Overkoepelend thema is ‘high tech for a sustainable future’.

The 4TU.Federation presented five new educational programmes in The Hague yesterday. 22 million euros were allocated for the realisation of the initiative. A total of 44 tenure trackers and 29 postdocs are working on the research cores. The overarching theme is ‘high tech for a sustainable future’.

‘Kijk ook naar de behoefte van maatschappij en arbeidsmarkt’

De Raad van State is positief over het wetsvoorstel ‘Internationalisering in balans’. Wel moet er duidelijk in komen te staan dat het sluiten van anderstalige universitaire bacheloropleidingen 'een uiterste middel' is. In het hbo hoeft er weinig te veranderen.
