UT receives a warning for non-compliance with the smoking ban

| Redactie

The UT has received a warning from the Netherlands Food and Consumer Product Safety Authority (NVWA) for non-compliance with the smoking ban on campus. It is the first official reprimand since the campus has been labelled 'smoke-free'.

The NVWA issued the official warning to the UT at the end of November. Although the campus has largely been a 'smoke-free zone' since the 30th of March 2020, many people still smoke on campus. The UT deliberately does not enforce the rule; they’d like the UT community to address each other’s smoking behaviour. As a result, the UT runs the risk of fines from the NVWA.

For now, the university has only received a warning, not a fine. Fines can amount to 4,500 euros per violation, which are imposed on the university. The UT can then recover this fine from the smoker.
