Hunter Calder, a Master’s student of Communication Science, is fed up with smokers on a smoke-free campus and the university’s lack of measures. He channelled his frustration into this opinion piece. ‘Where I draw the line is when students and staff are threatened, simply for trying to implement the policies of the university.’
In collaboration with Studium Generale, U-Today will host a debate about the campus smoking ban during this Monday’s lunch break at the Vrijhof Amphitheater. Panel members will be UT vice-president Mirjam Bult and BMS researchers and addiction experts Marloes Postel and Marcel Pieterse.
As of last Monday, a smoking ban is in effect on the terrace of the Theatre Cafe and in front of the entrances to the Vrijhof at the request of the building’s main tenant, Hans Oeloff (director of the Centre for Educational Support, CES). ‘Employees are bothered by the smoke rising up along the wall,’ says Oeloff.
