ECIU University is entering a new phase. ‘It’s a paradigm change,’ says Màrius Martínez, president of the ECIU and vice rector for International Relations at the UAB (The Autonomous University of Barcelona). ‘We aim to create an agile, easy and attractive ecosystem for learners across Europe.’
ECIU University, a new European university coordinated by the UT, has received a grant of €14.4 million, allowing it to move onto the next phase. ‘We want to grow from 500 learners to 5000 learners,’ says Sander Lotze, director of ECIU University.
The ECIU University is officially a three-year pilot, but it certainly doesn’t intend to stop there. To confirm its long-term strategy, there is now the ECIU University Vision 2030, highlighting the plan to create a brand-new European ecosystem. ‘We really believe that this is the way forward,’ say two of the Vision’s main authors, Sander Lotze (Director ECIU University) and Heli Harrikari (Director Continuous Learning at Tampere University).
The ECIU University was launched a year ago. The project, coordinated by the UT, is now taking its next steps. First students will ‘enter’ the brand-new European university in February and the ECIU partners are busy developing a virtual reality environment for learners. The UT Executive Board has decided to allocate in total 4.415 million euros to the ECIU University project. Their investment plan was approved by the University Council today.
The University Council has expressed their reservations regarding the plan for the ECIU University. They question how well will the pilot be embedded within faculties and how it will benefit the UT. This matter was discussed during the University Council meeting today.
With a letter of support, all ECIU regions recently professed their support for the establishment of a European university, including the region of Twente. However, Maarten van Steen, chairman of the ECIU Smart Regions working group, believes that this ambition can be taken a few steps further still.
The ECIU University is not shy in taking a novel approach to its board. Not only board members of all the member universities call the shots, seven so-called societal stakeholders also take up a pivotal role on the board. According to ECIU President, Victor van der Chijs, the new university wants ‘to be fully open to society’s questions and expectations.’

Thanks to that, learners from all over Europe can soon sign up for this new European university, which aims to offer brand-new type of education open to everyone and focused on solving challenges, not on getting a degree.
