None of the nominees has previously made it to the final of the Central Education Award, which is organised by the Overleg Studieverenigingen. However, all three have already been named lecturer of the year by their respective study associations. Study association Komma nominated Farrokhnia, Van ’t Hof won the decentral education award at Isaac Newton, and Borsje took first place at ConcepT.

A jury consisting mainly of students, along with several teachers, subsequently selected them as finalists. According to the jury, choosing just three finalists for the title of ‘teacher of the year’ proved difficult. ‘This is not due to a lack of quality elsewhere, but rather reflects the strength of a community in which excellent education is, hopefully, the norm rather than the exception.’

The final will serve as the closing event of the Week of Education on Thursday 11 June. Each of the three finalists will deliver a ‘mini lecture’, after which the audience and the jury will decide who wins the main prize.

The award consists of a certificate and a trophy. In previous years, the prize also included a cash award of 2,500 euros, but this has no longer been the case since last year. The current title holder is Janneke Alers.
