| Amr Shaker

On Thursday March the 20th, the Iranian Network of the University of Twente is organizing an event to celebrate Nowruz; the Iranian new year. Nowruz marks the first day of spring and the beginning of the year in the Persian calendar.

Although most of us in western culture celebrate New Year's Day on the first official day of the Gregorian calendar, there are many different unique dates and New Year celebrations around the world. One of the ancient New Year welcoming ceremonies celebrated in the history of mankind and still alive is Nowruz.

Nowruz is an ancestral festival marking the first day of spring and the renewal of nature. It promotes values of peace and solidarity between generations and within families as well as reconciliation, thus contributing to cultural diversity and friendship among people and different communities. The Iranian Network has extended an invitation to everyone to join their celebration of Nowruz this year in UT.

The event will take place at Boerderij Bosch on campus. The event will start with a presentation on Nowruz history and customs. There will be a live performance of traditional Persian music and folklore dance. Attendees will get a chance to socialize with Iranian students and learn more about their culture.

The Iranian network at UT has only been active for two years. It was founded by Mohammadreza Khelghati the current president of the network along with two other PhD employees. Mohammadreza said that such events as Nowruz celebration, serve the main goals of the network. It brings Iranian culture to public awareness at UT, and while living in a foreign country, makes Iranians feel a bit like home
