Professor Wiendelt Steenbergen (Biomedical Photonic Imaging Group) and his research team will participate in the Academische Jaarprijs 2013 (‘Academic Annual Prize 2013’).

They are the only UT team, alongside 16 teams from other universities in the Netherlands, to have joined the prestigious contest. The Academic Annual Prize was created by, among others, the Royal Netherlands Academy of Arts and Sciences, to stimulate academics to increase public awareness of their research achievements. To this end, the team that has written the best communication plan to boost public involvement with their research will be awarded 100.000 euros.

Steenbergen and his team aim to increase public awareness of the importance of their photoacoustic tissue imaging research, which enables for pain-free breast cancer screening methods. Their Mammography project plan has already survived the first selected round, during which projects were tested on the basis of scientific feasibility. The winning team will be announced by the jury towards the end of October.
