Animals of the campus

| Redactie

We are celebrating World Animal Day today by remembering a few of the ‘animal’ stories we covered over the years. From Cubicus turtles to troublemaking geese, here is a list of some of the fauna our reporters have encountered on campus.

Cubicus turtles

Did you know that four turtles used to live in the Cubicus? For more than twenty years, in fact. Until they became too big and had to be moved to an animal shelter about four years ago

The lost cow

In 2002, the mystery of the cow number 4068 took over campus. The cow was found wandering the bicycle path and nobody had a clue why she came and who she belonged to.

The troublemaking geese

After causing traffic problems on the Hengelosestraat in 2012, the iconic group of geese had to be removed from the campus which had been their home for ten years. The university was geese-free for an entire weekend until a new group of geese was brought here.

The bat hotels

Did you know that bats were preventing the reconstruction of the Ravelijn in 2008? To solve the issue the bats were gently moved to Citadel and to a couple of bat hotels.

The wandering sheep

Do you remember the sheep that mysteriously appeared on campus and then set up camp right next to the Vrihof? What a fun day that was two years ago.

Test animals

Although organs-on-a-chip might make animal testing redundant one day, there is still an animal testing lab on campus. We visited the local mice and rats a few years ago. To keep them docile, the animals listen to music all day, as to not be disturbed by noises from the hallway.
