'I walk by myself, but I don't feel alone anywhere'

| Stan Waning

Hundreds of students will get to know the University of Twente during the Kick-In. Who are they, where are they from and do they look forward to it? U-Today lets you get to know a first-year student every day during the introductory period. Today: Maarten Post (18) from Hengelo, bachelor student Mechanical Engineering.

Maarten Post (18)

Why did you choose Twente?

'I come from Hengelo, so the University of Twente was an obvious choice, also because my sister already studied here. Moreover, I have been cycling to Enschede past the campus for years, so the UT is not unknown to me.'

Found a place to live yet?

'No, but I wasn't looking either. I still live with my parents, that doesn't only save a lot of hassle, but also a lot of money.'

What do you expect from your time as a student?

'Everyone says that your student years are the best time of your life. I hope I will be able to say the same in a few years' time.'

Are you going to join an association?

'I played football for Achilles'12 in Hengelo for many years, but I unsubscribed because I want to play football at Drienerlo. I also think Isaac Newton is an interesting study association. For the time being, I am not registering with any student association.'

Have you been vaccinated?

'Certainly, but unfortunately so recently that I have to get tested during the Kick-In, because I don't have a QR code yet.'

What is your first impression?

It is very cosy everywhere on the campus. I still walk around a bit on my own, but I don't feel alone anywhere because people are coming up to you everywhere.'

What are you going to do in your first months here anyway?

'Mainly studying. That is the biggest step for me. I also want to have fun, but the focus is mainly on studying in the beginning.'

What are you dreading?

'I'm not dreading anything, but I might have to get used to the pressure of work. It is certainly higher here than it was when I was in secondary school.'
