Loran joined ITC in 1985 as a teacher, at the time still an independent education institute. In 1989, he moved to Indonesia with his wife, later spending time in several other countries, including the Moluccas and Rwanda. In Rwanda, he contributed to establishing a centre for geographic information systems, in collaboration with the National University of Rwanda.
Since 2015, Loran has served as ITC’s international cooperation coordinator. Over the course of his career, he has been active in more than 25 countries across the Global South. According to dean Freek van der Meer, Loran made ‘a lasting impact’ and has been ‘an ambassador for ITC’s capacity-building mission’.
To mark his retirement, Loran received the Juliana Medal: an honour awarded to individuals who have made significant contributions to UT, commonly presented in recent years to those concluding a distinguished UT career.
