Dutch university board members, together with financial experts and bankers, explored alternative fund raising possibilities for universities during a Fundraising for Research Congress organized by the University of Tilburg last Monday. Proposals included the release of stock to be bought by private members of the public. According to one professor at the Free University, Theo Schuyt, universities could earn between €50-100 million from such a scheme, particularly if participation would be tax deductible. Fearing further governmental reductions and cut backs in their teaching and research budgets, Dutch universities, including the UT, are actively seeking additional sources of income.
