Fastest Switch Physicists from UT’s MESA+ Institute for Nanotechnology have contributed to creating the fastest optical switch in the world. The switching time within a semiconductor device is at speeds of 0.3 picoseconds, where a picosecond is a millionth of a millionth second, approaching the limit set by the speed of light. Switches are omnipresent in computers as they are crucial to manipulating information encoded as bits. These faster switches are expected to yield ultrafast optical data communication, tiny on-chip light sources and lasers, and perhaps even switches for quantum bits of information. The 3TU.Datacentrum, an initiative of the libraries of the UT, TU Delft, and TU Eindhoven, offers a long-term archive for storing scientific research data. It also allows you to more easily share your data and even access or execute software that you used years ago to analyze your data. For more information, see datacentrum.3tu.nl Campus Pop On Friday 10th of June the UT’s second Campus Pop Festival will take place. Dutch singer Anouk shines as the festival’s main act. Besides her, Caro Emerald, Waylon and Ben Saunders will perform, as does saxophonist Candy Dulfer. The festival starts at 2pm. His ‘portrait of an unknown man’ can be viewed in Rijksmuseum Twente running until 26 June 2011. Rembrandt’s painting will be on display in the portrait gallery, accompanied by the museum’s most beautiful portraits. The painting has been loaned from Aken’s Suermondt-Ludwig Museum and was painted by Rembrandt in 1632. Bachelor Continues Prospective UT students can continue to register for a Bachelor in Educational Sciences and Technology for the coming academic year (2011-2012), with the guarantee of being able to finish it at Twente. Based on the UT Executive Board’s plans to possibly close down the educational program due to a relatively low annual influx of students, recently reports appeared in Dutch media that students could no longer sign up for the Bachelor. The decision on the long-term continuation of the educational program is still pending.
