Green Vibrations
This year Ascension Day will be celebrated bigger than ever. The Carillonveld at the campus is central stage for the non-profit festival Green Vibrations 2011 on Thursday 2 June. Organizers list the atmosphere as being ‘relaxed and friendly.’ More than fifty acts perform on four different stages. The line-up can be found on greenvibrations.nl. The final program post one week before the festival starts. Tickets cost €13, including the first three drinks, and are available at greenvibrations.nl/tickets.
Juggling acts
The annual Dutch Juggling Festival takes place in and around the UT Sports Center from 2 to 5 June. Besides much spontaneous juggling, various juggling workshops, competitions and high-quality shows will be held. Not to be missed is the colorful juggling parade going around campus from 2pm to 4pm on Saturday 4 June. You can also become a juggling specialist yourself: join workshops and other activities held during one day for just €7.50. For further info, visit njf2011.nl. CTIT
The Centre for Telemathics and Information Technology (CTIT) organizes a symposium entitled ‘Security and Privacy – something to worry about?’ on Tuesday 7 June in the Waaier, room four. The symposium focuses on the problem of limited or compromised user security and privacy on the Internet, and related ICT and digital security issues. A mixture of industry and academic experts will lecture, demonstrating how technological, legal and societal issues all coincide, when it comes ITS and digital privacy and security issues –and their resolution. Indonesian Fare
The Indonesian Student Association Enschede organizes a Food Bazaar in the Vrijhof Yard on Tuesday 7 June. Join in and taste some nasi and many other delicious Indonesian dishes and snacks. Prices depend on your appetite: pay €1 to access one snack stand, €3 for three stands, or €5 for an ‘all you can eat’ deal. Pro Deo
UT Theatre Sports Association Pro Deo engages in an improvisation theatre contest on Friday 27 May at 8pm in the Vrijhof’s Amphitheatre. The theatre sports association’s international members compete with the visiting ‘Schwung’ team from Nijmegen. Encourage the UT-ers as they perform on stage, where a wide range of unpredictable scenes are bond to play out, depending on the demands from the attending audience. PiezoFlare Funds
MESA+ Industrial Partner SolMateS received a three million dollar investment from the Twente Technology Fund and East-Netherlands Holding Companyfor the final development phase of their piezoelectric deposition machine PiezoFlare 1200.This device is an automated deposition system for PZT thin films on 6" or 8" wafers and is based on revolutionary pulsed laser deposition. SolMateS technology was developed at the UT, and is the most advanced manufacturing solution currently available to deposit piezoelectric thin films. The unique product will be used to create essential components for the next-generation mobile electronics, thin film actuators and medical devices.
‘I AM MEDIA’
The organization ‘I AM MEDIA’ holds the 3rd edition of its event by the same name, when the doors of TETEM1 stand open on Thursday 9 June, Hulsmaatstraat 35, Enschede. One of the guest speakers includes Wanjo Temkow. In 2002, he founded the UT spin-off company moblilaria.com. Later Radioman Erik de Zwart joined the organization. The company’s consumer brand Tunin.FM replaces the FM transistor radio with a Smartphone. The app Tunin.FM has already been downloaded over 3 million times. Holland’s Herring
On Tuesday 7 June they will finally be for sale everywhere: Hollandse Nieuwe or simply Dutch New: the first, fresh herring fish of the season, suitable for consumption. To celebrate their celebrated arrival, a stall sells the Hollandse Nieuwe at the Education and Research Square, outside the Waaier building, between the hours of 11am and 2pm. The Waaier’s cafeteria also serves this Dutch specialty on its menu, Tuesday 7 June. The fish is typically eaten raw, with some freshly chopped onions. No forks are necessary.
COMSOL
Experience the power and efficiency of the new COMSOL Multiphysics Version 4 and get the opportunity to install a 14-day trial version on a laptop. The COMSOL workshop shows thenewest version to emphasize model-builder user interface. Join program demonstrators on Thursday 26 May from 1pm till 4pm in the Horst building, room 112, on campus. The first half of the workshop provides an overview of COMSOL Multiphysics Version 4 and all its capabilities. The second half is a hands-on tutorial. 'Bommetje'
Do you find it really annoying when you are having a swim and people keep jumping in the pool practicing cannonballs? Take the chance to show the true art of a splashy cannonball at the Dutch Student Tournament 'Bommetje.' The tournament takes place at the UT outdoor swimming pool on 27 May and starts at 7 pm.
