24-hour museum

Enschede’s municipality has recently opened an online museum to allow for a peek into its varied art collection, including art works normally kept indoors. The Enschede Collection comprises three categories: City History, Modern and Contemporary Art, and Visual Arts. Surf to 24uursmuseum.nl/kunstcollectie.asp and select the option ‘kunstcollectie’ to watch the selected art items.

Café reading

Do you love to read or flick through the latest magazines while enjoying your cappuccino? Or are you keen to improve either your English or German vocabulary? Then café SamSam, located at Enschede’s Old Market Square, may be the place for you. One of its walls is covered with a rather big magazine rack, containing various publications in English – from iPhone magazine to Jamie Oliver’s Jamie to American celebrity gossip magazines and the National Enquirer. German magazines include Der Spiegel and Die Bunte.

Delft in China

Delft University of Technology is the first Dutch university to open a research branch in China. The Beijing branch is based at the Institute of Semiconductors within the Chinese Academy of Science. Doctoral students plan to conduct research on LED lighting, a highly energy-efficient technology. Because of their energy efficiency, LEDs have the potential to prevent millions of tons of carbon emissions and have a potential market worth billions of euros.

Messed up

Since its foundation in 2005 the sport association Messed up Exxcellence has offered floorball or so-called Innebandy, a type of indoor floor hockey game developed in Sweden in the 1970s. Join in open training sessions every Tuesday evening from 7:30pm to 9pm and on Friday afternoons from 4:30pm to 6pm.The sixth edition of the Messed Up Exxellence tournament takes place on Sunday 29 May. Refugee funding

Well-known, Iranian-born Dutch author Kader Abdolah completed his undergraduate studies in the Netherlands thanks to a grant from the Foundation for Refugee Students, as have many others. The Foundation for Refugee Students is a charity aiming to help formally recognized refugees integrate and settle in the Netherlands by funding their academic studies. The University of Twente is one of their favored institutions.
