The Dutch Parliament has expressed concern over the presence of antibiotic resistant Extended-Spectrum Beta Lactamase (ESBL) bacteria in vegetables. Amsterdam-based scientists scrutinizing fifteen types of vegetables found that around six percent were contaminated. The intake of antibiotic resistant ESBL bacteria could harm people with a bladder or lung infection caused by ESBL bacteria, meaning they can no longer rely on commonly prescribed types of antibiotics. The scare follows earlier-found traces of ESBL bacteria in Dutch-produced chicken meat. The relatively high usage of antibiotics in Dutch chicken and cattle feed is thought to underpin the growing bacterial resistance.
