Dr. Mobushir Riaz Khan’s recently completed PhD project at the ITC uncovered a form of possible EU fraud. Khan developed a method to determine through satellite images the type of crops that are being grown somewhere and linked to this expected harvested volumes. Khan’s research findings indicated that the Spanish province Andalusia grows far less sunflowers than the European Union pays for by money spent on its agricultural subsidies in the region. Khan passed his viva on 23 February. His research findings are expected to contribute to improved food policies and food security world-wide.
