Judicium Research Award

Hundreds of students, mostly coming from less-developed countries, faculty professors, special guests and staff attended the official ITC Faculty Opening of the Academic Year program on 23 September at the Grote Kerk in Enschede’s Old Market. The first lecture for new students entitled ‘Twenty Years of Progress: GI Science’ was given by Michael Frank Goodchild, a professor of geography at the University of California, Santa Barbara.

Chinese researcher Si Yali, a PhD candidate, won the annual Judicium Research Award for her innovative research, where she tried to make a link between bird migration patterns and human diseases.

Jury members noted mostly the multidisciplinary nature of her article that was published in Geospatial Health in 2009, saying the article concerned a ‘very interesting and relevant subject with global significance’ that transcended the divisions between developed and developing countries. The award is given out each year for the best scientific article, and the jury selected Yali’s article out of 12 other nominations and a shortlist of four finalists.
