The origin of the band's name occurred naturally, as Fernández comes from Habana city, making him an ‘Habanero,’ and the other members of the band come from Mexico City, or in Mexican slang, they could be called ‘Chilangos.’ The name also evokes one of the characteristic traits of Mexican cuisine, namely its spiciness, especially the taste of a ‘chile habanero,’ one of the hottest peppers in the world.
After a successful first performance at the International Food Festival, Chilangos Habaneros welcomed three new members for its next public appearance. Dutch-Canadian Bob Lansdorp, Polish Pawel Lewandowski, and Italian Maurizio Burla (guitar) added their talents. Now the band has become a multi-national experiment, debuting in no less than the Atak stage at the Olympia party last weekend.
For this group of musicians, sharing music is all about fun, and Friday's show was no exception when the band played Quantanamera, Oye com ova and the popular La Bamba: "We had a great time sharing the stage with Punt Uit!, and we are very grateful for their invitation to play,’ said Oscar Enríquez who is earning his master’s degree in the Physics of Fluids at the UT. Now Chilangos plan to keep working on extending their repertoire, offering people a broader tour through Latin American music, from Argentina to Mexico.
