Close by the UT is the Twekkelerveld neighborhood, where the local carnival parade starts at 2:30pm from the industrial terrain at Rigtersbleek Aalten on the Lambertus Buddestraat (street) on Saturday, 13 February. Last weekend, the first official carnival celebrations in the region kicked off in the small village of Glanerbrug, situated along the German border.
Carnival parades
For those who are not yet familiar with the madness of Carnival, get prepared to witness as the Dutch cast away their level-headed temperaments. Carnival in the city of Oldenzaal has been a household name in the Twente region for 55 years and attracts a crowd of 100,000 each year. Local residents build floats for months in advance, holding to the tradition since 1954 when the city held its first parade. Known as the `Boeskool City' or `Cabbage City,' Oldenzaal's festivities are on Sunday, 14 February at 12:30pm.
