Animal Rights

The Federation of European Laboratory Animal Science Associations (FELASA) is composed of independent European laboratory animal science associations from 20 countries including France, Germany, and the Netherlands. FELASA is recognized at European and international levels.

FELASA coordinates the education and training for scientists engaged in the use of laboratory animals and animal health monitoring. It also publishes recommendations for persons responsible for the well-being of laboratory animals, the design and conduct of studies involving animal experimentation, and for specialists in laboratory animal science.

`I had to learn how and what to feed the rats,' said Sandra Teixeira, `how to pick them up, wake them up, and give them injections. I also had to learn about their normal behavior, so I would be able to recognize when they were unhappy.'

FELASA maintains relations with national, international and governmental bodies concerned with laboratory animal science in Europe, notably the Council of Europe and the Commission of the European Union.
