Sports center ready for future

| Redactie

Only the scrutinizing visitor will notice a touch of paint here and there. Apart from that, it is hardly noticeable that over the past months the sports center has been completely renovated. Jan Willem Hidskes, director of the sports center, is satisfied, especially about the wooden sports hall; he states, ´It will be multifunctional.'

The canteen, the indoor swimming pool and the showers are complete. Work is still being done on the wooden sports hall and the offices.

`Most of the renovation work, like the installation of new air filters, is invisible to visitors.' As an example he shows us one of the new dressing rooms. `New benches, new clothing hooks and new tiles. But do you see the difference? We've just modernized everything.'

The wooden sports hall, however, underwent a unmistakable metamorphosis. It is still under construction. There was a small delay because of the discovery of asbestos early this summer. From the canteen, there will be a glass view of the wooden hall. It is scheduled to be finished this week, after that the hall needs only a new floor. Hidskes calls it `the most beautiful sports hall of any university in the country'. `The hall has been completely stripped and refitted with wood in different colors. I think it's a multifunctional space, ideal for something like a diploma presentation, for example.'

Now that the sports center meets all the current requirements, Hidskes feels it is time for some organizational changes. With the new Student Union Activity Card, it will be possible to participate during the walk-in hours. It will be an ideal way to try out different sports, especially for international students and employees. `It is one of the ways we are trying to meet the demands of that market.'
