Prof.dr. Detlef Lohse, professor in Physics of Fluids at the University of Twente, has been appointed Fellow of the American Physical Society (APS). Lohse is amongst others known for the research that Michiel Versluis and he, together with the biologists from Munich, have conducted into the sound brought forth by the so-called 'snapping shrimp'. This was shown to be a beautiful example of fluid dynamics: a bubble generated in the water collapses and causes a loud bang. His fundamental research into turbulence and the behaviour of granular media also led to publications in renowned journals.
