As announced in the last edition of the UT Nieuws, next weekend is Open Monumentendag 2002. Organized on September 14th and 15th, this year's activities are dedicated to the 'merchant spirit' as an acknowledgement of the contribution of the Dutch East Indies Company to Dutch history. Every monument that can be linked to merchandising, but also many other interesting sights not necessarily connected to the merchant trade, will be open to the public for free. If you want a taste of the Dutch merchant spirit, don't hesitate to get out of the house on September 14th and 15th.

In Enschede, visit the Jannink museum, the Natuurmuseum and Museum Twente. Besides these sights, you can also take a look at the mills of Lonneker and Wissink, visit the city hall or the big churches in the center of the city. In Denekamp, tour the Sintgraven castle, a haunted house whose history dates back to 1381. In Oldenzaal, see the Palthe Huis, an impressive residence from the 17th century.

For those of you who are willing to travel a bit farther, many more monuments are open on these two days as 330 municipalities take part in this event.

For further information visit www.openmonumentendag.nl or call the Enschede VVV-office tel. 053-4323200.
