'The foreign PhD students at the UT and their partners complained often about the scarce social opportunities offered to them by the University. Mainly the PhD students and partners were affected since there already existed SMIT, an organization where Master's students could come together. After working for one year, the International Office of the UT succeeded in establishing very good connection to different support groups though it was a hard job. So if you're feeling lost come along and ask,' says Suzanne van der Kolk from the International Office of the UT.

The most important of the new collaborators is the Student Association Board (SAB), from the ITC, who welcomes PhD students and their families as associate members. More precisely, they 'look forward to collaborating with the UT and find this an opportunity to relate to the students of the University,' states Peter Minang, SAB president.

SAB offers social activities, mainly for PhD students and their families. The social activities are offered to both women and men and often include children.

What sorts of activities are there? Every three weeks a party is organized at the Schermerhorn Lounge, located at the first floor of the ITC International Hotel (a.k.a. the Dish Hotel). The Lounge has two pool tables, an audio set, a video set and two ping-pong tables. Other pleasant means of spending time through SAB are excursions throughout the year to various locations such as the Keukenhof, Amsterdam, Paris, Brussels or Vienna.

In order to attend these activities, register with the SAB through the secretary of the UT International Office in the Vrijhof, room 205, tel. 5424, email [email protected] and pay the annual fee of 12 EUR. For further information about SAB, contact Suzanne van der Kolk in the International Office or Peter Minang at the ITC-building at [email protected].

In addition to SAB, there are other possibilities. For instance, the ITC fellowship offers Bible study Wednesdays at 7 p.m. at the ITC and an ecumenical Christian service in English on Sunday at 10:30 a.m. Try the International Neighbor Group (ING) or Women in Twente (WIT), mentioned in the UT Nieuws English Edition article from 6.12.2001.
