Technopark-concept apparent

The Executive Board has approved a semi-permanent building for the Microsystem Technology Foundry near the research institute MESA+. The company was founded two years ago by the UT and Innofonds Twente BV and operates facilities such as laboratory and office space for the growing industry surrounding this pioneering institute.

According to dr. C. Eijkel, technical-commercial director of MESA+, MTF will set up near his research institute. 'Some existing companies like to settle near this institute and its facilities. Additionally, MESA+ produces start-ups. Since last year MTF has been offering a special cleanroom for such companies near MESA+. Soon offices will also be available.' Eijkel points out that the city of Enschede has not yet issued a building permit. 'Nothing happens without a building permit. We have chosen a semi-permanent style because of the UT's real estate plans, to prevent us from getting stuck on a location which is no longer relevant. As an independent corporation MTF has been financing this project using money from business.'

The establishment of small companies or parts thereof near MESA+ is not new. They are already located in the EL/TN-building and in a few portacabins. 'Now we're just neatly combining the existing companies and housing several new ones as well. That results in better dynamics which create a stimulating atmosphere. You can look at this development as the precursor of the technopark concept.' Eijkel said.

'MTF is an existing company which is already active on campus as a university-started company, comparable to Drienerlo Real Estate (DOG) or the Drienerburght. The new office building will also accommodate various central MESA+ employees who do not have a suitable office at this time.' Eijkel concludes by telling that an average of three companies per year are started on campus. 'That is a lot in such a high-tech environment. A real asset to the university.'
