The 250 new residences that the housing department (SSHD) wants to build, will not arise at one but at three campus locations. Except on the boulevard between Sports Centre and Vrijhof, the SSHD also wants build next to the Sports Centre on the side of the sports fields, as well as near the Medical Centre.
The original plan to realise the all-new buildings on the boulevard where the cluster of portacabins is at present was abandoned after the last consultation with Masterplan architect Jan Hoogstad and the UT-real estate steering group. 'Three locations turned out to be permanently assigned', SSHD director Bert Bokhove says. And that suited the SSHD fine, because Bokhove himself 'does not really like' massive complexes. 'We can now divide those 250 rooms over three locations and that will only add to the recognisability of the different clusters. We would also prefer to appoint three different architects.'
Now that the locations have been determined the SSHD will start looking for architects, who should then have the first sketches ready by the end of March. In the plan for the 250 rooms, 100 have been reserved for foreign students, guests, or employees, who need slightly more spacious and fully furnished housing. This project involves over 11 million euro. The actual start of construction should be in the spring of 2003.
