In the search for an explanation why some countries develop successfully and others do not, literature on development has embraced several favourite ideas over the years: the savings gap, human resource development, institution building, and property rights, just to name a few. At the moment 'culture and management' is very popular and some already seem to believe that all would go well if only the cultural gap could be overcome. 'Culture and management' is the subject of discussion on January 30, 2002. The discussion will be introduced by Hans Opdam of the Technology and Development Group of the University of Twente.
