European governments should make sure that access to higher education is only dependent on knowledge acquired earlier. Discrimination and improper selection should be avoided at all cost.
This is stated in the 'European Student Declaration' which was determined last weekend (16-18 November) in Brussels at the European student convention. In the Belgian capital approximately 120 student representatives from 37 European countries gathered around 17 November. This date had been specifically chosen, because it symbolises as 'International Student Day' the sixtieth birthday of the resistance action of Czech students against the Nazi occupation.
'Students are not consumers of a product' according to Sunday's declaration. 'They form the core of education itself. Education is not a consumer article. It is a human right that cannot be traded away. The effect on a democratic society and personal development is just as important as that on the labour market.'
