Mayor Peter den Oudsten will be delivering opening remarks to welcome all international students to the city of Enschede on Thursday, September 18. International students will have the chance to participate in the `Art and Cultural Mile,' the first part of the event offered to give students a glimpse of the newly constructed district of the Roombeek, an area of the city affected by the firework disaster in 2000.
Tour groups will leave the Muziekcentrum in the city center, passing along a diverse spectrum of Dutch attractions, such as a barrel organ and a stand selling tradition Dutch treats. The tour route will bring students past the new cultural area in Roombeek and finish with a group photograph at the TwentseWelle, the brand new cultural and historical-heritage museum, recently opened in April 2008.
The second part of the event, `Discover Enschede,' will focus entirely on the city of Enschede. An information market will be held in the Muziekcentrum to offer students the chance to learn about the four educational institutions and their facilities. Several student associations, local government agencies, cultural institutions and commercial groups will be available for students who have practical questions, and the local fire department will be on hand to demonstrate how to safely extinguish cooking fires.
By the close of the day, new international students, who are studying in Enschede, will certainly have a good impression of what the city has to offer, including educational, cultural and leisure facilities.
