Former carnival prince and president of the foundation City Organ `The Tukker' Enschede showed international students one of his greatest passions, turning the barrel organ to produce music to fill the air. `I give my joy to people from all corners of the earth who have come here,' said Benno Molenkamp, a local Enschede resident at the International Students Meet Enschede (ISME 2009) event last Saturday at the Saxion premises, where more than 500 newly arrived students gathered.

For the second year in a row, the four higher educational institutes in Enschede (UT, ITC, Artez and Saxion) took the joint initiative to organize the ISME 2009. Janneke Kalf, communications director of the ITC, estimated that fifty procent of the target group, first year international students, attended on Saturday.

The folklore dance group `De Plaggenmijers' arrived from the village of Rekken dressed in 1900s vintage clothing to revive folk dances from the past to a modern international generation. `The young people come easily to talk to you,'said Annette Karel. `It's sometimes difficult with the language barrier, but we speak a little English and with hands, feet and heart, we can communicate well enough.'

Artist and instructor at the ArtEZ Albert Bouhuis, in a green jumpsuit, said the 6x6 meter canvas was based on a map from the 1700s of the stars and planets. `First we painted the skeleton of the Compagis Brahea map as a background for the students to fill in the details. During one moment, I counted sixty students painting. We didn't expect it. I had my doubts if people would be inspired to paint.'
