High barriers for students to study abroad

A study presented to Minister Plasterk on October 12, revealed there are too many obstacles for Dutch students who want to further their studies abroad. According to the Dutch Foundation for Worldwide Students, bureaucracy surrounding the funding of portable scholarships brings students into problems. The study also showed the cost of studying abroad is still too expensive and there are few scholarship opportunities.

The results are contrary to the rhetoric of many Dutch universities and the government concerning the internationalization of higher education. `It is a shocking paradox that the internationalization of higher education is one of the spearheads of Dutch education, but there are still many obstacles for the students,' said NEWS-president and master student at the University of Oxford Eelke Kraak.

The Inter-Urban Student Talks (ISO) regrets the outcome of the investigation. Henno van Horssen, chairman of the ISO: `It is deeply sad that institutions offer poor guidance to students who want to study abroad. It is short term thinking, if you believe you can keep Dutch students in the Netherlands in a world where mobility is important.'
