EU-students wanted to participate at the university

| Redactie

A university like Twente lives greatly on the efforts of participating students. Starting with cultural or sport associations and ending up with faculty and university council members - participating students keep this living and that is important. However, in many occasions something is missing. The University of Twente is aiming for becoming more international, while at the same time the engagement of international students in active participation in e.g. councils is dramatically low. This is an issue that really has to change, as the number of international students is ever increasing and an international University should desire their participation, furthermore they might bring new insights.

The greatest competitor for participation at the university are side jobs. Especially German students rather choose for sitting at the checkout counter or working in the cinema. This allows them to get the Dutch scholarship from IB-Groep, in contrast to participate at their university and doing something good for it. The law at the moment says that EU students may get the scholarship from IB-Groep of 250 Euros per month if they work 32 hours a month in the Netherlands. But combining this work and participating at the university does not work, as it is too time consuming. So they have to decide, and because activities at the University is the considered work, they often choose for side jobs.

The university council party UReka is elaborating this issue and working on a solution for it on a national level. To be successful with this plan to make the scholarship accessible for active EU-students, a strong lobby and feedback from the University is needed in order to prove that this problem really is very important for many associations and students.

UReka thus wants to invite UT-students that feel affected by this theme to give comments and be heard. Help give this issue a broad base.
