As a response to the #MeToo movement and related issues, the UT aims to get an independent ombudsperson. In January, the UT will also launch a new website on integrity and an ‘active bystander training’. These plans were presented at today’s meeting organized by the FFNT (Female Faculty Network Twente).
The BMPI (Biomedical Photonic Imaging) group at the UT recently implemented an internal code of conduct, which also covers topics such as sexual harassment or discrimination. Today, BMPI professor Wiendelt Steenbergen presented the code during a FFNT lunch discussion in the DesignLab.
The recent worldwide sharing of ‘#MeToo’ stories has revealed that power abuse and sexual harassment are omnipresent in our society, and academia is no exception. In fact, ‘the extreme hierarchy in academia could give Hollywood a run for its money’, as was stated during yesterday’s #MeTooUT open discussion.
