The Connecting Hands Committee (formerly called the Helping Hands Committee) of the Student Union is a group of UT volunteers focused on organizing events for asylum seekers residing in Twente. After arranging a recent computer course and an ice-skating event for the refugees, the committee put together yesterday´s football match and a tour of the university.

More similar events to come

About 60 asylum seekers from AZC asylum center arrived to the UT and could choose between participating in a friendly football tournament or joining a campus tour. Football enthusiasts were welcomed by players of VV Drienerlo, who also arranged a short football workshop before the actual game.

'We wanted to organize something that many people from the asylum center could enjoy,' explains Adel Masri from the Connecting Hands Committee. 'People are divided into mixed teams consisting of UT student-volunteers and the asylum seekers in order to create a nice multicultural environment. We are collaborating with AZC and we will certainly organize more similar events. This is only the beginning.'
