Cheap eats out

Do you love trying out new cuisines but does your wallet tend to protest? The overview below tells you where to find some striking dishes – all under €10.

Indonesian: Warung Harapan

The Warung Harapan food stall may be small in size, but it offers the rich taste of the Indonesian kitchen. Products are still cooked the authentic way using - for example - trassi bakar (dried shrimp paste) as a key ingredient. A good way to get acquainted with Indonesian food is to try Warung Harapan's small menucontaining nasi goreng, veggies and one meat side dish (€ 3.50) or perhaps try some nasi rammes with tumis vegetables and Indonesian meatballs (€7.50). The food stall resides at Enschede's open market, open every Tuesday and Saturday.

Suriname: Shivani's

The Suriname cuisine is varied, reflecting the diverse origin of the inhabitants of this former Dutch colony, which ranges from Native Americans to Indians to African descendents. Meals are usually roti (a thin pancake originally based on the Indian chapati) or rice-based. Restaurant Shivani's, at the Lipperkerkstraat 33,offers main courses, starting in price from around €6.25 onwards. Typical added-on ingredients may include doksa (spicy duck meat) and kousenband (green beans). If all this new food is too much then simply try some 'suri-snacks' like Telo (fried cassava with cod fish) or the Bara vegetable ball.

South American: Carlina's

Carlina's menu is based on popular dishes from Columbia and other South American countries, such as Tamales (€8.50): a Native American dish of soft packets of corn doughsteamed in banana leaves after being stuffed with chicken, pork and vegetables. Another popular dish is Estofado de Res, or beef and veggies in a spiced red sauces (€9.50). Tasty snacks from this restaurant, located at Lipperkerkstraat 7, include empanadas, and for vegetarians, Arepas Vegas (corn cakes with veggies and egg).

Japanese: Sushilicious

As its name implies, this take-away restaurant truly specializes in sushi, offering over 30 types, from Nigiri rice rolls to Hosomaki sushi. Prices are calculated per roll: four relatively large Futomaki rolls are €4.50, for example, and eight rolls costs €8. Visit Sushilicious online for the full overview of prices. Sushilicious is located at Jan van Goyenstraat 2a, in the west side of the city. When you order over €8, the food can be delivered at fee of €1.50 extra.

Turkey, Italy and Lebanon: Eating House LaiLa

Ok, ok, LaiLa, in spite of its Bulgarian owner, does not offer relatively special food. But it does offer meals and desserts from at least three countries, namely Turkey (lahmacun, döner and baklava), Italy (pizzas) and Lebanon (felafel) and all under €10. Find Laila at Marktstraat 6.

Not sure what to try first? Google the name of the restaurant and ‘eet nu’ and you can see what grade it received based on recent visitor scores. Or just be adventurous and go with open eyes -and mouth. Bon appetit!
