The new home of the Mesa + Institute nanotechnology lab was officially opened by His Royal Highness Prince Williem-Alexander in the Waaier building on Friday, 5 November. Scientific director of the institute, Professor Dave Blank, made opening remarks and invited the Crown Prince to tour the cleanroom. Business director of the institute, Miriam Luizink, showed the new facilities. The Prince had the opportunity to meet nanotechnology researchers and interested parties could watch the tour via a live broadcast connection.

TV presenter Jan Douwe Kroeske spoke during the opening program after research presentations from three PhD candidates, speeches by the Executive Board and the president of NanoNed, David Reinhoudt. On an Ipad, the Crown Prince typed in Dutch: ‘Hierbij is het Mesa+ Nanolab geopend.’ Champagne bottles were uncorked and then came a surprise. The scientific director of Mesa + Institute and professor of Inorganic Materials, Dave Blank, was honored with the medal as ‘Knight in the Order of the Dutch Lion’.
