ITC observes Africa from space
The European Space Agency contracted the ITC Faculty to provide training in the international Tiger II initiative. Satellite data will be used to address water problems in the African continent and improve water management practices. According to a specialist in the fields of cartography and hydrology, Zoltan Vekerdy, who also is one of ITC project managers, the use of earth observation data in Africa is still in its infancy. ‘For Africans, it is certainly not easy to determine what information they need, how to request the information and finally how to incorporate it into their own systems.’ The ITC organizes the training of twenty African project organizations, serving as a bridge between not only African organizations but research institutes worldwide.
