Rotterdam poet
Marking the Enschede Poetry Marathon, War child Jules A. Deelder (1944) is a Rotterdam poet, writer, jazz drummer and performer, who likes to refer to himself as an 'auctor'. He goes through life as the self-appointed Night Mayor of Rotterdam. Deelder’s work is characterized by terse statements, laced with English words, and expressions from the world of pop and underground culture. He has a passion for the Beatnik generation of William Burroughs, Alan Ginsberg and Jack Kerouac. Recurring themes in his work include World War II, mind-expanding drugs, the city of Rotterdam, Sparta football club, and the golden age of jazz in the 1930s and 1940s. His reading, marking the Enschede Poetry Marathon, will be on 25 January from 12:35pm to 1:35pm at the Vrijhof Ampitheater.
