Prime minister opens brain battle

None other than Prime Minister Jan Peter Balkenende will be the keynote speaker at Create Tomorrow, the national think tank competition organized on campus by the Student Union and Innovation Platform Twente on Wednesday, September 28. Dutch TV host Jan Douwe Kroeske will present the event.

For a long time, it was unsure whether the prime minister would actually come in person, but Anke Huiskes of the Student Union assures us that his visit is certain now. `Obviously, we are very pleased. As chairman of the National Innovation Platform, Balkenende is the obvious choice for opening our think tank. It also provides us with more exposure.' The organizers are also happy with Kroeske. `Because of his TV shows, like Jules Unlimited, he has a lot of experience with technology.'

The think tank will be held to celebrate the fifth anniversary of the Student Union. A thousand students from several universities, organized in 125 teams of eight, will enter a brain battle with each other on September 28. For a day, they will work on social and business cases, prepared by local businesses.

On the day of the contest, all teams will start out with a workshop on innovative thinking, to prepare them for the day. After that, each team gets six hours to develop creative and innovative solutions for the selected problems. An expert jury will determine which team deserves the first price, 4000 euros. In the evening there will be a dinner and a cabaret show (including Kristel Zweers of the Dutch impro-cabaret TV show `the Lama's'). The final party will take place in the Bastille, starting at 22h. Teams can still register. More information on www.createtomorrow.nl.
