Greetings: As in any language, there are various degrees of formality when greeting someone in Dutch. With most acquaintances, a simple dag or hallo will suffice. Close friends may use the ultra-casual hoi. Other occasions call for the more formal goedemorgen (or goedemiddag or goedenavond, depending on the time of day). Even these phrases can be rendered less formal by omitting the hard `d' sound so that goedemorgen becomes goeiemorgen. Now stop reading and go find a Dutchman to greet!

It’s University Council election week at the University of Twente. But why does it matter—and who should you vote for as a student? We spoke with the lead candidates of the two student parties: newcomer Lukas Binnekamp (22) of DAS and seasoned representative Bonny van der Aa (22) of UReka. They shared their motivations, plans, and ambitions for the council.

Forse verhoging instellingstarief met minimaal 11 procent

Het college van bestuur wil het tarief voor het instellingscollegegeld stevig verhogen. Vanaf september 2026 moet deze met 11 procent omhoog, om voor inflatie te corrigeren. Daar gaat nog een eenmalige verhoging van 15 procent overheen.

Substantial increase in institutional fee by at least 11 percent

The Executive Board wants to significantly increase the rate for institutional tuition fees. From September 2026, it must increase by 11 percent to correct for inflation. A one-off increase of 15 percent will be added to that.
