'Cultural Encounter' is a new elective Masters course for incoming international students to learn and experience the Dutch culture in order to adapt to their new intercultural learning and living environment. Likewise the course will benefit Dutch students who are paired with foreign students for one month (40 hours) of intensive interaction. To earn 2 ECTS, participants will write a report about their reflections and do a small literature study on cultural differences.
The course consists of three parts. Part A comprises intensive interaction and discussions between two 'cultural buddies' - a foreign student and a Dutch student - which entails cooperative activities (e.g. cooking, sports) as well as discussions on typical Dutch and foreign cultural issues and perspectives on world problems.
Part B is a desk study to explain the cultural differences between both students using cultural theories (ex: Hofstede, Trompenaars). In part C each student writes an individual report on the cultural experiences gained; the encountered cultural differences and their explanation; and, reflections on the cultural encounter's implications for scientific work, study and social interaction.
S.J. De Boer and S.J.H. Rietjens are the lecturers charged with this exciting new learning opportunity. Positions for international students are still open. To apply for the course send an email ASAP to: [email protected] Note: Please check with your program manager before you apply for the course.
