International Workshop

The 8th International Workshop on Strategic Technology Management was held on the UT campus October 11-15. The `summer workshop,' usually held earlier in the year, is a collaborative effort between the University of Twente, the University of Manchester and the University of Leuneburg in Germany. Sponsored by the Department of Technology and Organization (BBT), the goal of the workshop is to offer real world experience in a diverse international setting with genuine progress shown by the end of the five days. According to workshop organizer Hanneke Bodewes, the event also provides an opportunity to strengthen the ties between the three universities. Each university sends not only students, but also employees and professors who act as advisors during the week. Linking the institutions creates an environment for new research ideas and opportunities for publication and future proposals.

This year was the largest and most diverse group so far, consisting of 40 students from eight different countries. The project was a presentation and report for Ten Cate Thiolon, an artificial grass pitch manufacturer. General reaction from student participants is very postive; all enjoyed the international workgroups, the setting of the UT campus, working with current marketing and technology management topics and the partnership with Ten Cate Thiolon. Kai Wolf from Leuneburg enjoyed the green UT campus: `With its wide green campus outside the city, (it) seemed to be a little city itself with everything a student needs.' Several students mentioned the advantages of networking with others in their field, the international cooperation, the long but worthwhile hours of work and the friendly character of the groups. Finnish PhD Sappo Hänninen liked the group atmosphere where everyone had a chance to lead `and actually did lead when their vision was most useful for the group.' Jonathan Styles, Rob Phillips and Carol Birchmore of Manchester were impressed with the level of organization in the week's schedule, stating that there was the `right balance of academic work versus social time, (allowing) us to integrate and talk with the other students.'

Many workshop colleagues professed a genuine interest in future participation. As an added measure of success, Bodewes proudly reports how enthusiastic and satisfied Ten Cate Thiolon was with the results of the week. Each year's workshop offers a unique experience with a different company and university setting; the workshop will take place next year in Manchester.
