De award werd Collis toegekend door Amerikaanse uitgevers van het Eductional Media and Technology Yearbook vanwege haar grote bijdrage aan de ontwikkeling van e-learning en de toepassing van computers en internet in het onderwijs. Collis is sinds 1997 hoogleraar teleleren aan de faculteit Gedragswetenschappen en sinds 2000 Shell Professor of Networked Learning. Zij is de grondlegger van TeleTOP. Thomas Reeves is een internationaal erkend expert op het vakgebied van e-learning en schreef verder nog: `Betty Collis is definitely someone upon whose shoulders many a career has been, is being, and will be launched. As a result, her enormous contributions to our field will go on and on.'
