Tuition fees still a bone of contention

| Redactie

The matter of raising tuition fees for non-European students seeking a Master's degree at the UT has not yet been resolved. Over the next few weeks, the University Council plans to cross-examine the board about the announced increase from 1476 to 8100 euros. This is especially relevant now that it appears that the University of Eindhoven will not increase its fees, which according to the Executive Board of Twente, breaches previous agreements.

As reported earlier, the University Council objects to the increase, in part because the board did not consult the council before changing the students' charter, which the council insists is in violation of the law. Aside from the right to formally accept the measure, the council also questions its content, which has already been published and seems impossible to reverse.

UC Chairman Geerten Schrama says, `We certainly want to discuss the uniformity of the policies of the three technological universities with the board. Was there actually an agreement with the other universities? If so, since when are we as council bound to that? We also want to discuss the factors that determine the fees. Should the cost of the program be charged in full to this category of students? Or should one consider marketing as well? And should one even differentiate between Dutch and foreign students?'

The denounced procedure will be discussed separately with the Executive Board, according to Schrama. `At the very least, it's a good reason to review the charter again.'
