How can we improve communication with individual students? Two weeks ago, the Student Union polled over four hundred students on campus to answer that question. The results should lead to an improved communication plan.

`We are curious about the information demands of the individual student,' Union board member Ruben Visser said.

In the current situation, the Student Union reaches its target group through her portal on the homepage, email, UT-Nieuws and the association's boards. Visser: `Obviously, not all of the information from and about the Student Union is relevant to each student. For example, some students may more interested in certain special offers than in policy matters. Through this questionnaire, we hope to gain more insights into news service demands.'

Visser reports that the name of the Student Union is well known: `About ninety percent know us. That percentage decreases, however, when you ask what we do, what we stand for and what activities we organize.' Visser is trying hard to come up with new ways to better reach the students individually.

Applied Communication Sciences students who are active in the Communications Committee of the Student Union drafted the questionnaire. Last week, three students went out for four days to poll in various buildings across campus. The results are expected in about six weeks.
