Putting blended learning to work in a multinational company, was the title of an informative meeting about e-learning, Tuesday afternoon in the Ravelijn. Two topmanagers from Shell and IBM presented their vision on learning in the technological work environment of a multinational.

One of them, Adam Lomas, head Global Learning and Development at Shell International Exploration and Learning, explained why e-learning is so important in multinational organisations. `After all, Shell work processes in Nigeria, should run exactly as those on an oil platform in the North Sea. By using e-learning every Shell employee is able to acquire the same skills and knowledge.'

The UT-delegation taking part in the forum 'High Tech Connection' in Silicon Valley, returned happy last week. The contacts made are certain to bear fruit, participant Kees Eijkel (technical-commercial director of Mesa+) expects. `I return with a bag filled with leads', he reports, `three of them are substantial.' Silence. `But it is hard to say anything about them, because of competition concerns. But it could very well be a wonderful spring.'

The first six months of his four-year PhD-programme are behind him, but last week UT-PhD student Alex Zilber defended his graduation research for the jury of the Fortis Award in Antwerp. Successfully, as he could go home the winner with 4,000 euro in his pocket.

Alex Zilber (24) completed the two-year MasterÆs programme Financial Engineering at the UT last summer. His second master, after having completed a mathematics study in his home country at the state university in Moscow.

The Siberian is doing his PhD in the group of Mathematics professor Arun Bagchi, brain behind the international master's programme financial engineering, and head of the Financial Engineering Laboratory of the CTIT.
