Professor Maja Pantic (b. 1970) has been appointed special professor of Affective and Behavioral Computing on November 1 at the faculty of EWI (Electrical Engineering, Mathematics and Computer Science, EEMCS) for a period of three years. Pantic also holds a position at the Imperial College in London.

The young professor, who is Serbian by birth, studied computer science in Delft and obtained her doctorate there. Since last spring she has worked at the Imperial College in London. At the UT the new chair will be incorporated into the research group Human Media Interaction of professor Anton Nijholt. Ton Mouthaan, dean of the faculty EEMCS, states: `Pantic will extend the new chair in the following years. Her research is focused on the detection, interpretation and effective handling of emotions and feelings in a computer-controlled environment.'

The position of the new professor is part-time (the equivalent of one day per week). Practically speaking, Prantic will not be present at the UT every week, but rather for a few days consecutively every few weeks. She is the second female professor appointed at the UT in a short time. Last month, Jennifer Herek was awarded a position as professor of Optical Techniques at the faculty of Science and Technology.
