Koninginnedag 2007

| Redactie

Do not come to the UT on Monday, April 30, because chances are you will be alone. The university will be closed to join the country as it celebrates Koninginnedag, or Queen's Day. Traditionally this celebration of the Dutch monarchy was held on the reigning queen's birthday. When Queen Beatrix was coronated in 1980, the first law she passed was to hold Queen's Day on her mother, Queen Juliana's, birthday (April 30) for all time. This was especially fitting since Queen Beatrix was born on January 31.

About 100,000 people will come to Enschede to join the festivities. Awash in a sea of orange (in honor of the royal House of Orange), the city is transformed into a giant `free market' (read: flea market) as individuals peddle their wares free of charge. To reserve a spot to empty your attic, call 053-480-1970. Children have exclusive right to the Zuidmolenplein where they can sell their old toys.

The bells will ring as early as 8 am, but it is not until 10 am that the mayor of Enschede officially inaugurates Queen's Day in the Oude Markt, in front of Sam Sam café. Among other mayoral duties, he appoints `the Most Orange Person of Enschede,' whatever that means! Stop by to watch and get free coffee or oranjebitter at SamSam.

Throughout the day, the Oude Markt will be designated as the Music Square, where various bands and musical ensembles will perform all day long. In Kruispunt de Graaff, or MultiCultiplein, the day will be devoted to international demonstrations of music, crafts and dance. The Stationsplein will feature skating demonstrations, including skateboarding and hockey.

Grab an orange t-shirt and head into town!
