1648: the Peace of Westphalia, ending the Eighty-Year War between Spain and the Netherlands was signed not very far from Enschede in Münster. A visit to this historic town is certainly worthwhile.
The first thing to notice upon arriving in the city center is the cobbled street with stunningly beautiful buildings. The peace treaty was signed in the city hall, Friedenssaal, which is a fine example of late Gothic architecture. There are plenty of shops in the picturesque Prinzipalmarkt, selling delicious bread, pies and pastries. The big department store Karstadt has everything shopper desires. Münster is a university town just like Enschede, there are a lot of pubs in the Kuhviertel area. Pop into a restaurant in Münster's Old Town to try a local gastronomic specialty like Töttchen, or tongue of veal. Other attractions include the All-Seasons Zoo and the Aa lake near the city center.
You can go to Münster by train, departing from Enschede Central Station. It's a trip of about 90 minutes. Every hour at 26 minutes past the hour, the train to Münster Hauptbahnhof (Central Station) departs. The train back is at 8 minutes past the hour. Or go by car: go to the Grolsch brewery and take the motorway to Germany, following signs for Münster. Parking is cheap in the big parking lot at the Hindenburgerplatz.
